Pregnancy and the postpartum period are profound transitions in a woman’s life, and yoga can offer meaningful support throughout both stages. During pregnancy, yoga may help prepare the body for labor and birth, ease discomfort, improve sleep, and support steadier energy levels.
This course is designed to give you a clear understanding of the physical, mental, and emotional changes that unfold during pregnancy and after childbirth. You will learn how to adapt traditional yoga practices to meet the specific needs of expectant and new mothers with care and confidence.
Our 100-hour pre and postnatal yoga training is part of the Yoga Alliance YACEP program, and the full 100 hours can be added to your continuing education hours.
At Anandam Yoga School, yoga is more than a certification — it is a way of living, learning, and connecting. As a family-run school led by Sandeep Atri from India and Dr. Katharina Austermann from Germany, we bring together traditional yogic wisdom and a modern scientific understanding of the body and mind.
We believe great teachers do not need to be perfect. They need authenticity, knowledge, compassion, and the confidence to teach from lived experience. For that reason, we keep our groups small, creating a safe and supportive space where students can ask questions, make mistakes, grow, and be fully themselves.
This prenatal and postnatal yoga teacher training is ideal for teachers, practitioners, and mothers who want to support women through pregnancy and postpartum with greater awareness and presence. We give special attention to the often-overlooked postpartum phase, recognizing that recovery and hormonal shifts continue well beyond the first weeks after birth and call for long-term, compassionate support.
This 100-hour program gives you the tools, knowledge, and confidence to guide women through safe and effective pre and postnatal yoga practices. Our holistic approach includes asanas, breathing techniques and pranayama, meditation, and mindfulness practices, all tailored to support physical strength, mental clarity, and emotional well-being during these important transitions.
We dedicate a full section to adapting yoga for each trimester, honoring the changes that occur at every stage of pregnancy. Daily classes are designed for the needs of each trimester, allowing trainees to experience directly how practices shift across pregnancy. Each session is shaped to reflect the physical, mental, and emotional changes that arise throughout this journey.
Asanas are a core part of the training. During pregnancy, we focus on gentle but effective postures such as modified sun salutations, squats, pelvic tilts, and cat-cow stretches to help reduce lower back pain, support pelvic floor strength and flexibility, and encourage optimal fetal positioning. In the postpartum phase, pelvic floor exercises, modified plank poses, and restorative poses with props support the gradual return of core strength and pelvic stability.
In the asana alignment classes, you will learn how to adapt yoga postures for different stages of pregnancy and postpartum, along with postural alignment, the effective use of props, benefits, cautions, and contraindications.
These classes explore how yoga can support women during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum recovery in a safe and meaningful way. You will gain practical guidelines, supportive practices, and important considerations for both pregnancy and the often-overlooked postnatal phase, helping you confidently guide mothers through physical, emotional, and hormonal changes.
Mindful breathing is a valuable tool throughout pregnancy, helping increase oxygen supply, improve circulation and detoxification, reduce stress, and manage anxiety. You will study different breathing techniques for the various stages of pregnancy, labor, and childbirth, as well as postpartum breathing and pranayama practices that support recovery, emotional well-being, and the return of pelvic floor strength and responsiveness.
Positive thinking, loving-kindness, and body awareness are especially important during pregnancy and after birth. Meditation supports this process, and you will explore guided techniques for use in your pre and postnatal yoga classes, including breath awareness, loving-kindness meditation, mantra chanting, visualization, and body scans.
In yogic anatomy, we go deeper into Prana and its role in pregnancy, Nadis, Pancha Prana, Pancha Koshas, Shatkarma techniques for pregnancy, and Bandhas, including how they may be used during and after pregnancy.
These sessions will help you learn how to prepare pre and postnatal yoga classes, classes for each trimester, and cross-trimester classes. You will also cover how to welcome pregnant students into regular classes, safety guidelines, how to integrate props, postnatal safety, how to create a safe relaxation environment, yoga practices for labor and birth, and “mum and bubs” classes.
In anatomy classes, you will study the physiological changes during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum, along with the impact these changes can have on the mental and emotional well-being of expectant and new mothers. We also cover specific pregnancy and postpartum conditions and how to adapt the yoga practice accordingly in this pre and postnatal yoga teacher training in Germany.
