Description

Join this transformative Pilates Teacher Training in Cape Town, South Africa, and step into a month of focused study, movement, and professional growth.

Across this immersive four-week experience, participants explore mat work, reformer, cadillac, chair, and barrels while building a stronger understanding of anatomy in movement and refining their teaching skills. The training is led by CME Director Renee Watson together with the senior faculty at The Source studio, supporting students as they develop the confidence and clarity needed to teach Pilates at a high level.

A special highlight of the course is access to the Conscious Movement Conference. Outside of training hours, students also have the opportunity to experience Cape Town’s many attractions, including Boulder’s beach penguins, Chapman’s Peak drive, the winelands, art galleries, Kalk Bay, world-class restaurants, and Table Mountain. Accommodation is provided in a luxury house in the leafy Southern Suburbs, while lectures take place in the green surroundings of The Source Studio.

Additional Hours

To fully integrate the material into their teaching practice, students must complete the following practical development hours:

  • Observation Hours (25 hours): observing Reformer classes to assess teaching methods, equipment management, exercise sequencing, and client progression strategies.
  • Self-Practice Hours (25 hours): personal Reformer practice to deepen understanding of spring resistance, movement mechanics, and exercise execution.
  • Student Teaching Hours (10 hours): supervised teaching practice with fellow students or clients, focusing on cueing, equipment adjustments, and correction techniques.
  • Assisted Teaching Hours (10 total hours across Reformer, Cadillac, Chair, and Barrels): teaching under direct supervision from a teacher trainer who offers immediate feedback on cueing, corrections, class design, and overall effectiveness.

Assignments:

  • Class Design Assignment: creating a 60-minute Reformer class plan with logical sequencing, balanced muscle loading, suitable spring choices, and smooth transitions.
  • Case Study (also known as Student Teaching): students choose a healthy client from their personal or professional circle and complete an intake form, posture analysis, and movement assessment. They then design an initial Reformer programme and guide the client through 10 sessions, developing cueing skills, learning how to modify and progress exercises, and reflecting on the learning process at the end.

Final assessments:

  • Theory paper: a written exam covering apparatus setup, repertoire, anatomy, modifications, contraindications, posture analysis, movement assessment, and teaching methodology. A minimum score of 75% is required.
  • Practical evaluation: a one-hour assessment focused on the Pilates Reformer repertoire, including exercise knowledge, equipment setup, modifications, progressions, and understanding of the work.
  • Teaching assessments: three separate teaching evaluations in which students teach a one-hour Reformer session to one or more clients, demonstrating effective sequencing, clear instruction, appropriate corrections and modifications, and professional client management.

Students have one year from the lecture dates to complete certification. With these comprehensive requirements, CME students graduate as confident, knowledgeable, and compassionate Pilates Reformer instructors.

A BIT OF HISTORY ON JOSEPH H. PILATES

Joseph Pilates was born in 1883 near Dusseldorf, Germany. Though he was a sickly child, he grew into an accomplished athlete.

He was living in England when World War I began and was interned on the Isle of Man.

During that time, he developed the mat exercises now known as the Original 34. It was also there that he began using springs from hospital beds as resistance, which later evolved into Pilates apparatus such as the cadillac and reformer.

He moved to New York in the 1920s and, with his wife Clara, opened a body conditioning gym that quickly became popular with dancers, athletes, and celebrities.

Although not always fully recognised, Clara played an essential role in teaching, training, and running their Contrology studio. Joseph also wrote two books, Your Health and Return to Life Through Contrology, which outlined his six principles—breath, precision, control, concentration, centering, and flowing movement—along with his repertoire and ideas of well-being.

Joseph Pilates died in 1967, leaving behind a lasting legacy, a distinctive body of work, and a community of dedicated followers who have continued to teach and evolve the method.
