A BIT OF HISTORY ON JOSEPH H. PILATES
Joseph Pilates was born in 1883 near Dusseldorf, Germany. Though he was a sickly child, he grew into an accomplished athlete.
He was living in England when World War I began and was interned on the Isle of Man.
During that time, he developed the mat exercises now known as the Original 34. It was also there that he began using springs from hospital beds as resistance, which later evolved into Pilates apparatus such as the cadillac and reformer.
He moved to New York in the 1920s and, with his wife Clara, opened a body conditioning gym that quickly became popular with dancers, athletes, and celebrities.
Although not always fully recognised, Clara played an essential role in teaching, training, and running their Contrology studio. Joseph also wrote two books, Your Health and Return to Life Through Contrology, which outlined his six principles—breath, precision, control, concentration, centering, and flowing movement—along with his repertoire and ideas of well-being.
Joseph Pilates died in 1967, leaving behind a lasting legacy, a distinctive body of work, and a community of dedicated followers who have continued to teach and evolve the method.
