
Zoketsu Norman Fischer was ordained by Zentatsu Richard Baker in 1980 and received shiho, or Dharma transmission, from Sojun Mel Weitsman in 1988. He practiced at San Francisco Zen Center for 25 years and served as co-abbot from 1995 to 2000. In 2000, he founded the Everyday Zen Foundation, which he continues to lead. An author and poet, his most recent Dharma books include The World Could Be Otherwise: Imagination and the Bodhisattva Path and When You Greet Me I Bow: Notes and Reflections From a Life in Zen. His most recent poetry collections are On a Train at Night and Untitled Series: Life As It Is.
Norman and his wife Kathie have been married for 44 years.
