This three-week retreat offers experienced meditators the chance to join Green Gulch staff for an immersive period of residential practice. The daily rhythm includes zazen in the early morning, mid-morning, afternoon, and evening, along with formal oryoki meals, work periods, Dharma talks, and classes. Both formal and informal meetings with teachers will also be available.
Participants agree to remain within the Green Gulch watershed for the full duration, except by arrangement or in the case of emergencies. The intensive ends with a five-day sesshin.
The study focus for this intensive is Training in Compassion: Zen Teachings on the Practice of Lojong. Lojong is a Tibetan Buddhist practice that uses short phrases, or “slogans,” to cultivate bodhichitta, the heart and mind of enlightened compassion.
Applicants accepted into the intensive will generally have already taken part in at least one all-day sit, sesshin, and/or a guest student stay at Green Gulch. If you are new to Zen practice, it is strongly recommended that you complete a one-day sit or sesshin at Green Gulch before applying.
Before submitting an application, please review the Sample Schedule/Shingi. If you are unsure whether your practice experience is appropriate, or if you need early acceptance notification for travel, please contact the Abbot's assistant with questions.
Application deadline: December 1, 2026.
