With Lisa Ernst and Trudy Goodman. This retreat is open to both new and experienced practitioners. In Buddhist practice, we often look closely at suffering and how to ease it, yet the Buddha also pointed to the cultivation of wholesome, life-supporting qualities that bring clarity, ease, and joy to the heart and mind. These are not optional extras on the path; they are essential conditions for wisdom and liberation. Among the Buddha’s most beautiful teachings on these qualities are the Seven Factors of Awakening: mindfulness, investigation, energy, joy, calm, concentration, and equanimity. As these factors are nourished, they naturally support and balance one another, creating the conditions for deep insight and peace.
During this retreat, we will explore how these seven factors are already present within us, even when they go unnoticed in everyday life. Through mindfulness and reflection, we’ll practice recognizing them and allowing them to grow more steady and vivid, both on the cushion and in daily activities. Our time together will include sitting and walking practice, dharma talks, small-group meetings, and mindful, compassionate community in the peaceful mountain setting of Big Bear Retreat Center. Whether you are just beginning retreat practice or have many years of meditation experience, this gathering offers a supportive space to deepen presence, awaken joy, and rest in the stillness of the heart.
