Famous for its exceptionally pure water, often called the “tear of Europe,” the Tara is the longest river in Montenegro at 146.4 km. Its crystal-clear, icy water is drinkable along the entire stream, and the final 25 km of the river and canyon are especially prized for rafting thanks to dramatic scenery and 20 exhilarating rapids.

The Tara Canyon is the deepest in Europe, reaching 1,333 m, and the second deepest in the world after Colorado Canyon in America. Since 1977, much of the Tara River and its canyon have been protected by UNESCO as part of Durmitor National Park, placing it among the world’s 25 most significant natural landmarks. This remarkable landscape is filled with cliffs, rapids, and untouched wilderness, while its rich plant life includes species that have survived since the Ice Age. In some parts of the canyon, ancient black pine forests rise as high as 50 m, with trees that are up to 400 years old.
