The opening week of the Samye Institute Summer Immersion: The Buddhist Arts & Sciences welcomes participants into both the inner and outer dimensions of the Buddhist tradition through meditation, study, and dialogue. Guided by Shu-chin Wu, the Inner Science of Awakening Dignity offers a thoughtful introduction to the ways Buddhist teachings can reveal our essential nature.
Here, dignity is understood not as something to be achieved, but as something to be remembered: a recognition of the innate purity of our nature and the nobility already present in the heart. Through this lens, participants are invited to move beyond the narrow limits of ego and reconnect with the deeper field of goodness within. Meditation, reflection, and practical exercises support personal inquiry, inner clarity, and meaningful transformation.
This week also lays a strong and inspiring foundation for the wider immersion, combining contemplative practice with direct engagement in Buddhist wisdom and the Four Noble Truths.

Sophie (Shu-chin) Wu offers a teaching style shaped by both rigorous scholarship and a long-standing personal practice. With a background in Chinese intellectual history from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, she brings a nuanced and thoughtful perspective to every session. As an associate professor at Agnes Scott College, she teaches Asian history and philosophy, including Buddhism, with clarity, depth, and care. Her...
