This city tour offers an immersive introduction to Costa Rican culture and history through visits to several museums and historic landmarks in San José.
As the capital and largest city in Costa Rica, San José sits in the mid-western part of the Central Valley. It is known for its fertile green landscapes, coffee plantations, and the nearby Poás and Irazú volcanoes. With its mild, pleasant climate, the city is one of the country’s most populated areas and receives visitors throughout the year. Its central location also provides easy access to many of Costa Rica’s most popular attractions. San José blends deep cultural roots, historical character, elegant architecture, lively nightlife, and welcoming locals, making it both a traditional Central American city and a cosmopolitan urban center.
During the tour, you will visit the National Theater, often called “the jewel of San José,” a remarkable work of art and architecture built by Costa Ricans and completed in 1897. You will also explore the Gold Museum, an archaeological site of interest, followed by the Central Market, where Costa Rican heritage and traditions come to life and where you may browse and purchase local handicrafts. The itinerary also includes the Metropolitan Cathedral.
As we move through the city, we will point out a number of historically significant buildings and landmarks, including the University of Costa Rica, the Old Train Station, the National Liquor Factory, the National Supreme Election Bureau, the Asamblea Legislativa, the Metallic Building, as well as several parks and other sites of interest. This experience serves as an introduction to the capital, offering insight into its economy, culture, politics, religion, and current affairs.
