A 2-hour workshop in Arnside, Cumbria.
It can be difficult to truly imagine what a Meditate With Horses session is like until you experience it for yourself. The process begins in the body, with understanding arriving later. While many meditation and mindfulness practices start in the mind and then move into the body, this experience unfolds in the opposite direction.
Horses are remarkable mirrors. As prey animals, they are highly sensitive to their surroundings and to the emotional and physiological states of those nearby. In close connection with them, their calm, regulated nervous systems can naturally begin to synchronise with ours. Their heart’s electromagnetic field is many times larger than a human’s, and they respond with extraordinary sensitivity to subtle shifts in energy, emotion, and intention. In this way, horses act as powerful empaths, responding not just to what we say or think, but to what is happening beneath the surface.
Each session begins by feeding the horses, followed by settling into a quiet space together in their paddock. You may sit on folding chairs or lie on blankets or mats on the ground. We start with a gentle check-in, noticing how we feel emotionally and what we are aware of in the body.
Once the horses finish eating, they often wander over, expecting to be groomed. But here, grooming is not about technique or performance. Horses experience emotion physically, and their feelings often show up through their bodies as itchiness, restlessness, or a need for contact. By paying close attention to their body language, we can better understand and validate what they are communicating. This attuned grooming invites the horses into a relaxed, digestive state, and as we slow down with them, our own nervous systems begin to settle too.
We then introduce gentle breathwork and simple mindful practices, not as something to “achieve,” but to support this shared state of regulation. At a certain point, we step back, sit down, and allow the horses to choose how they want to be with us. This is where the meditation truly begins—co-created, responsive, and different every time.
No two sessions are ever the same. What unfolds depends on the horses, the group, and what is present in the moment. The best approach is to arrive without expectations. When expectations soften, presence becomes possible—and that is where the deepest shifts can happen. Throughout the workshop, guidance is offered through simple but powerful processes such as “listening like a horse” and gently returning to the present moment again and again.
For some, strong emotions may come to the surface, and these are supported with care and skill. Others may move quickly into deep calm or bliss. Sometimes the horses lie down, and you may feel drawn to rest on the grass beside them, held in a wide sense of connection—feeling deeply alive and at one with everything.
The two hours pass quickly. It is recommended that you do not use your phone during the workshop so you can be fully immersed in the experience, though photos can be taken if meaningful moments arise. We do not often give ourselves permission to be this present—surrounded by nature and in the company of such powerful, sensitive animals. In doing so, we begin to see more clearly what has been holding us back, and where growth, softness, and connection are ready to emerge.
