Description

This year-spanning series of workshops offers a grounded exploration of The Axis Syllabus and dynamic partnering practices. Through close attention to anatomy and movement, participants are invited to discover how the body is designed to move with greater ease, resilience, and choice. The work supports healthy patterns that can help sustain the tissues over time, while also developing the ability to use momentum skillfully and respond with adaptable support. As kinetic potential expands, so does the range of possibilities in dancing with others.

These workshops will weave together inquiry into the many relationships within ourselves and between bodies in contact improvisation and dynamic partnering. Boundaries and limitations will be approached as essential foundations for resilience. Participants will explore the body and shared movement as tensegrity structures, strengthening integrity through tensile resistance. The practice looks at the self as part of interconnected networks, and at interconnectivity as something that also lives within the self. And, of course, there will be plenty of dancing.

HOST BIO

Daniel Bear Davis

Daniel Bear Davis (MFA, SEP) is a movement educator, Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner, and interdisciplinary performance maker whose work supports people in accessing greater aliveness and inhabiting the details of lived experience more fully. He has taught Axis Syllabus, contact improvisation, contemplative movement practices, and embodied anatomy across Europe, Asia, North America, and the Middle East. In addition to teaching groups, he maintains a private practice as a somatic coach, drawing on Somatic Experiencing® to help renegotiate trauma and support resilient nervous systems. His approach is also shaped by cultural somatics, with an awareness of the wider web of human and non-human relationships that inform somatic experience.

Daniel’s work seeks to connect personal experience with larger fields of ancestral lineage, nature, culture, and more. Whether focusing on movement skills, nervous system regulation, or compositional practice, his intention is to foster informed choice and expanded possibility through curiosity and exploration.

He has worked with veterans and non-veterans in collaboration with Krista DeNio and the EchoTheaterSuitcase project, and in San Quentin Prison with The Artistic Ensemble. His original performance, On Contentious Grounds, explored intersections between the experiences of students at St. Mary’s College of Maryland and the experiences of oppression expressed in interviews he conducted with Palestinians in the West Bank.

His performance work has been presented at Performaticá (Mexico), the Imagining Bodies Symposium (Estonia), Dancing in Place Festival (Malaysia), SummerWorks (Canada), the San Francisco International Arts Festival, SoWat Now Contemporary Performance Festival, Looking Left Festival in California, the SEEDS Festival and E|MERGE Residency at Earthdance Center, MA, and at danceh0l0 in Brooklyn. He has also performed with Guillermo Gomez Peña, Nancy Stark Smith, Nita Little, Pipaluk Supernova/Live Art Installations, Felix Ruckert, Kira Kirsch, Erika Tsimbrovsky, Scott Wells, Cid Pearlman, and many other inspiring body/minds.
