Set off from Tivat, one of the sunniest towns in the Bay of Kotor, and discover a corner of Montenegro where elegance, legend, and natural beauty meet. Since 2011, Tivat has also been known for Porto Montenegro, one of the largest marinas on the Adriatic, where yachts from around the world gather and give the town its nickname, “Montenegrin Monaco.”
Just beyond Tivat lies the so-called holy archipelago, a cluster of three islands rich in history and mystery: Miholjska Prevlaka, also known as Flower Island, St. Mark’s Island, and Our Lady of Mercy. These islands have long been surrounded by legends and were once important pilgrimage sites.
Flower Island is considered one of the most beautiful places in Montenegro. It is linked to the mainland by a narrow strip of land that disappears beneath the water at high tide. According to tradition, this island is the birthplace of many palm trees, flowers, and plants that once flourished here in ancient times.
St. Mark’s Island is admired for its stunning beaches, stretching across an area of about 4 km, with a beach season that lasts for six months. Lush cypress trees and olives cover the island, adding to its peaceful Mediterranean charm.
Our Lady of Mercy is the smallest island in the archipelago, yet it carries great significance. Located in the center of the Bay of Tivat, it lies about 300 meters west of St. Mark’s Island and around 600 meters from the Luštica Peninsula. Measuring up to 80 meters in width and 147 meters in length, the island is surrounded on the outside by a 1.5-meter-high wall. It was founded in the 15th century by monks.
Today, the island is home to a women’s monastery of the same name, with monastic cells, the Church of the Virgin, a bell tower, auxiliary buildings, a courtyard with a gallery, walkways, and a lovely garden. Its cultural, historical, and religious importance makes it a truly special place — a sacred corner filled with nature, mystery, and stories passed down through generations.
