Olympic National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Biosphere, home to extraordinary biodiversity, towering Mt. Olympus, a 70-mile coastline, ancient forests, and wildlife such as elk, bears, whales, and marmots. Eight Native tribes call this peninsula home, and the land carries deep cultural and spiritual significance.
This is the 9th time Roy and Liz have offered this adventure, and over the past eight years the trips have been filled with beauty, connection, and groundedness. The experience is designed to combine the inner and outer journey: movement, stillness, community, solitude, and the restorative power of nature.
Included in the trip: approximately 14 to 16 healthy meals, park passes and permits, campsites, guided hiking and backpacking, walking and seated meditations, forest bathing, beach yoga, river yoga, yoga in a studio in Port Angeles, swimming, Sol Duc hot springs entry, camp cooking, and fuel.
This retreat includes a mix of short hikes, two nights of car camping, and three nights of backpacking. Backpacking portions are not very long or steep, generally under 5 miles per day, but this trip is still not suitable for everyone. Participants must be willing and able to carry their own backpack, tent, sleeping bag, pad, water, clothing, personal items, and about 3 pounds of shared community gear.
Because of the unique format, a Zoom meeting is generally requested before acceptance so the leaders can determine whether this is the right fit. The organizers also want to help guests choose appropriate gear. Gear is available to rent for the week, including backpacks, tents, sleeping bags, sleep pads, and hiking poles.
Forest bathing is approached as a healing practice of absorbing the life force of the rainforest. The retreat also explores the theme “Triggers as Gifts,” inviting compassionate awareness around reactivity and the lessons it can reveal. There will be teachings on healing the nervous system and clearing trauma.
The route moves counterclockwise around the Olympic Peninsula, beginning in Port Angeles and ending at Quinault Lake. Highlights include Heart of the Hills Campground, Hurricane Ridge, Lake Crescent, Sol Duc waterfall and hot springs, beach and river settings, the Hoh River rainforest, and one of the world’s great cedar groves.
Sample itinerary:
Carpooling will be arranged with a preference for 3-4 people per car, and no solo drivers due to limited parking at trailheads. Alcohol is not permitted at camps, though moderate consumption is allowed when dining out. This helps preserve a clear, sacred, and supportive space for meditation and healing.
Roy Holman and Liz Gross guide the retreat. Roy has taught yoga and meditation for about 25 years and has led hikes in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Liz also teaches yoga and meditation and is a gifted energy healer.
The group will be limited to about 10 people, so early sign-up is strongly encouraged. A $500 deposit is requested, with the balance due 30 days before the retreat. Travel insurance is recommended.
