The first Enlightenment Intensive began as an experiment in 1968. Drawing inspiration from Philip Kapleau’s Three Pillars of Zen, a Western teacher brought together koan practice, the Zen sesshin emphasis on sudden awakening, and face-to-face communication between partners. Students explored the koan “Who am I?” in an intense three-day format, and the results were striking. Many participants reported direct experiences. Encouraged by this outcome, the format was repeated again and again for 48 years, with consistent results. Enlightenment Intensives became a clear and effective way to work through hindrances and obscurations and, in some cases, to catalyze direct experience.
On this retreat, no one tells you who you are. The inquiry is yours alone. The teaching team simply encourages you to continue contemplating and presenting yourself as you find yourself to be, moment by moment.
This retreat combines face-to-face contact and communication between partners with continuous contemplation of the timeless spiritual question, “Who am I?” You work in dyads, taking five-minute turns to practice being present to yourself with immediacy and awareness. Whatever arises in response to “Who am I?” is communicated to your partner. When you are the silent listening partner, you simply witness. Judgmental, hurtful, or commentary-based responses to the other person’s experience are not part of the practice. When it is your turn to inquire, you turn inward toward your own reality. This is neither a mental exercise nor a social exchange; it is a practice of conscious, vulnerable attention to your present-moment experience of self in the presence of another.
The retreat is dedicated to sudden awakening. The “Who am I?” inquiry points toward direct experience of truth. Direct experiences can happen on many levels, and each one brings an unexpected and fundamental shift in consciousness. This is not something the mind can fully understand. It has nothing to do with what you think, feel, believe, know, or remember; it cuts through those layers and resolves the question in ways you cannot anticipate. In Zen terms, the “Gateless Gate” opens. Subject and object fall away, leaving the completeness of non-dual understanding. Separation disappears; union remains. There may be awe, peace, joy, knowing, contentment, and a depth of understanding unlike anything you have known before. You will also have the chance to explore and present your new awareness to your partner, supporting integration into the living fabric of your life.
Each day includes eleven 40-minute dyads, balanced with meals, walks, rest, instruction, and silent contemplation. The schedule is designed to meet your needs while continuously reflecting yourself back to you. The group field becomes concentrated with love, courage, acceptance, honesty, generosity, presence, and autonomy. Through personal contact and a dedication to truth, the retreat invites you to release roles and identities and be exactly as you are.
Participation can bring many benefits: you clear away what you no longer need, open your heart, and expand your capacity for contact, listening, and communication. The crises that may arise can strengthen freedom and resilience. Self-inquiry shifts from intimidating and confusing to a meaningful unfolding, helping you make friends with yourself.
Directly experiencing and presenting truth can help you live more consciously, stay in closer contact with others, and gain deeper insight. It can enrich whatever practice you already have and awaken you to truth as a living reality. Come with beginner’s mind and discover it for yourself.
