Since 1974, Steven Smith has been rooted in the Theravadan Buddhist Burmese lineage of Mahasi Sayadaw, bringing decades of practice and teaching experience to his retreats. He was trained and authorized to teach by the highly respected late monk and meditation master Sayadaw U Pandita, and has since guided practitioners in Vipassana and the Divine Abodes — loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity — across Asia, Hawai'i, North America, and Australia.
During this seven-day retreat, participants can expect a supportive environment for deep meditation practice, reflection, and inner stillness. Steven’s approach draws on a long tradition of mindfulness and insight, offering a grounded space for both dedicated practitioners and those seeking a meaningful pause from daily life.
Beyond teaching, Steven co-founded Vipassana Hawai'i in 1984 and later established the MettaDana Project in 1995 to support educational and medical projects in Burma. In the same year, he also helped establish the Kyaswa Valley Retreat Center in Burma, led by the late Sayadaw U Lakkhana, Abbot of Kyaswa Monastery.
