Beyond the Last Shangri-La: Extended Bhutan Himalayan Journey

This extended Bhutan journey invites travellers to go beyond the most familiar landmarks and experience the kingdom at a more measured, immersive pace. From the gateway town of Phuentsholing, the route rises gradually into the Himalayas, leading through Thimphu, across the dramatic Dochula Pass, into the valleys of Punakha and Paro, and finally back through southern Bhutan into India. It is thoughtfully designed for those who want a richer blend of culture, mountain scenery, and mindful travel.

Tour Plan

Day 1 – Arrival & Transfer to Phuentsholing | Gateway to Bhutan

Arrive at Bagdogra Airport (126 m | 412 ft) or New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (140 m | 460 ft). Meet & greet and drive to Phuentsholing (293 m | 961 ft), approx. 165 km | 4–5 hrs. Bhutan immigration formalities will be completed with assistance, followed by hotel check-in. Overnight stay in Phuentsholing.

Day 2 – Phuentsholing to Thimphu | Into the Himalayas

After breakfast, complete visa/permit formalities if pending and continue to Thimphu (2,320 m | 7,656 ft), approx. 158 km | 5–6 hrs. The journey climbs through river valleys and forested slopes, offering a scenic introduction to Bhutan’s mountain landscape. Upon arrival, check in and unwind. Overnight stay in Thimphu.

Day 3 – Thimphu Local Sightseeing | Culture & Traditions

Discover Thimphu’s cultural highlights, including Sangaygang View Point (2,865 m | 9,397 ft) for sweeping city views, Buddha Dordenma, the Institute for Zorig Chusum (Traditional Arts & Crafts), the Textiles Museum, handicraft shops, Zangthopelri Lhakhang, Simply Bhutan, and the Motithang Takin Preservation Centre. Overnight stay in Thimphu.

Day 4 – Thimphu to Punakha / Wangdi | Dochula Pass

After a leisurely breakfast, drive to Punakha / Wangdi (1,273 m | 4,177 ft), approx. 70 km | 3–3.5 hrs. En route, cross the scenic Dochula Pass (3,080 m | 10,102 ft), famous for its wide Himalayan panoramas. The evening is free for relaxation. Overnight stay in Punakha / Wangdi.

Day 5 – Punakha Sightseeing OR Gangtey Valley Excursion

Option 1 – Punakha Local:
Visit the impressive Punakha Dzong, cross the Suspension Bridge, and enjoy a 30-minute walk one way to Chimi Lhakhang. Optional white-water rafting on the Punakha River is available at direct payment. Overnight stay in Punakha / Wangdi.

Option 2 – Gangtey / Phobjikha Valley:
Take a full-day excursion to Phobjikha Valley (3,000 m | 9,845 ft), approx. 85 km | 3–3.5 hrs one way. Visit the Black-Necked Crane Information Centre and Gangtey Monastery before returning to Punakha / Wangdi. Overnight stay.

Day 6 – Punakha to Paro via Lamperi | Botanical Trails

After breakfast, drive to Paro (2,200 m | 7,218 ft), approx. 148 km | 4–4.5 hrs. Stop en route at the Royal Botanical Garden Lamperi. On arrival in Paro, check in and relax. Overnight stay in Paro.

Day 7 – Paro Sightseeing OR Tiger's Nest OR Haa Valley

Option 1 – Paro Local:
Visit Dungtse Lhakhang, the Bird's-eye View Point overlooking Paro Valley and Paro Airport, Ta Dzong, Rinpung Dzong, and Kyichu Lhakhang. Overnight stay in Paro.

Option 2 – Tiger's Nest Hike:
Begin early for a hike to Taktsang Lhakhang. The uphill trek takes approx. 2.5–3 hrs one way through pine forests; a shorter route is possible up to the cafeteria viewpoint.

OR
Option 3 – Haa Valley Excursion:
Enjoy a full-day excursion to Haa Valley (2,718 m | 8,917 ft) via Chele La Pass (3,988 m | 13,080 ft). Visit Haa Dzong, Lhakhang Karpo, Lhakhang Nagpo, and Wangchulo Dzong before returning to Paro. Overnight stay.

Day 8 – Paro to Phuentsholing & Siliguri | Return Journey

After breakfast, drive from Paro to Phuentsholing / Jaigaon (approx. 176 km | 4–5 hrs). Complete Bhutan exit formalities at Karbandi and Indian immigration at Jaigaon, then continue to Siliguri (approx. 165 km | 4–5 hrs). Check in and relax. Overnight stay in Siliguri.

Day 9 – Siliguri to Bagdogra / NJP | Departure

After breakfast, transfer to Bagdogra Airport or New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (approx. 15 km | 40–45 mins) for your onward connection, bringing this peaceful Bhutan journey to a close.
