Ayurveda treatment programmes can also be booked at any time for concerns such as stress, ageing or weight management, including a 28-night Panchakarma for complete detox.
Expert ayurvedic doctors oversee each stay, tailoring the programme to your medical history and current health condition. Treatments make use of medicinal plants grown on the ashram grounds.
Nature walks are available in the surrounding countryside and along the clean riverbank, where guests may relax, read, reflect, enjoy nature and take in the sunset hour. If you choose to swim, go with company and be mindful that crocodiles are present.
The ashram can also arrange day trips to nearby places of interest, including Mysore, a forest, a coffee and tea plantation, a Jain Temple, the Edakkal Caves and shopping at Sultan Bathery.
Spaces
Treatments are held in The Dhanwantari Ayurvedic Clinic, a large traditional Nalukettu-style building made of laterite stone with five spacious treatment rooms.
There are four yoga halls on site. Chakra Hall is the largest and overlooks the river, Surya Hall is smaller and surrounded by bright flowers, and Rama Hall is especially peaceful for meditation.
The 18 acres include gardens and organic farmland filled with vegetables, lentils, millets, spices, fruit, coconut and medicinal trees, along with nearby rice paddies, mango groves and a public river bank. A rooftop terrace looks out over the ashram’s forest canopy and offers wide sunset views beyond the western hills, while a riverside patio provides another place to unwind.
Accommodation includes 40 simple, eco-friendly bedrooms. Guests on ayurveda retreats stay in large cottages made from hollow clay bricks, set along the gardens and overlooking the river. There are also deluxe twin-share rooms with garden views and private rooms facing the river. Rooms sleep two, but may also be used for solo stays.
Each room includes a desk area separating two small double beds, a wardrobe, and table and kitchenette facilities. Windows are fitted with mosquito nets, and bathrooms include a shower, toilet, sink and a bucket for collecting extra water for washing clothes.
Sustenance
Guests and staff dine together in a communal dining area at wooden tables with beautiful garden views.
A small team prepares a nourishing vegetarian buffet, sourced as much as possible from the organic kitchen gardens, with dairy-free and gluten-free options available.
Two buffet meals are served daily in traditional silver thali dishes, with brunch at 9am and dinner at 7pm. Lunch is lighter, usually fruit and a snack, to keep the stomach clear for afternoon yoga or treatments.
Meals may include salads, flavoured millets or rice, Indian bread, and curry dishes made with a range of vegetables and lentils, served with chutney sauces or pickle.
Fruit such as papaya, pineapple, watermelon and banana is served every day at 1pm. Alcohol, caffeinated tea and coffee are not offered.
