This 7-day retreat offers an immersive introduction to the dynamic and disciplined world of Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga in Nepal. Known for its steady rhythm and strong connection between breath and movement, this practice combines flowing vinyasas with a set sequence of postures to create an energizing and deeply focused experience.
Traditionally, the practice begins with five rounds of Surya Namaskara A and five rounds of Surya Namaskara B, followed by a standing sequence and progression through one of the six series. The most widely practiced series include the Primary Series, also known as Yoga Chikitsa or Yoga Therapy; the Intermediate Series, Nadi Shodhana or The Nerve Purifier; and the Advanced Series, Sthira Bhaga or Centering of Strength.
Ashtanga is rooted in tristhana, a three-part approach that supports moving meditation through:
- Pranayama – ujjayi breathing, often called ocean breath, used to build internal heat and support oxygen flow
- Asana – a fixed sequence of postures, along with the engagement of the three bandhas: mula bandha, uddiyana bandha, and jalandhara bandha
- Drishti – a focused gaze that strengthens concentration and self-awareness
This retreat is designed to support both physical and mental well-being. Participants may experience improved strength, flexibility, coordination, balance, and rhythm, along with a greater sense of focus, a more positive mood, and reduced stress. Breath awareness is central throughout the practice, helping the body move with intention and control.
Held in a peaceful retreat environment with experienced Ashtanga Vinyasa teachers, the program includes clear instruction and notes to support your learning. The retreat also reflects the academy’s broader training focus on Ashtanga Vinyasa.
