“May your eyes be open to the Wonder and Mystery of life.”
Swami Nishchalananda is the founder of the ashram and the author of several well-known texts on the spiritual sciences of yoga and tantra. He is known for bringing exceptional depth of understanding together with humility and a grounded, approachable manner, making profound teachings feel clear and relevant. His style is practical as well as uplifting, speaking especially well to people living modern, science-oriented lives.
Born and raised in the UK, he studied engineering before turning toward the spiritual path in his early 20s. A deeper call to understand life led him to India, where he entered a long and transformative period of spiritual training.
For 14 years, he lived as a devoted disciple of his guru, Swami Satyananda, receiving extensive training in yoga, tantra, and Advaita. He was initiated into the essence of these teachings and later recognized by his guru as a yoga acharya, or Master of Yoga.
During this time, he also spent long periods in seclusion and mouna, or silence, deepening his realization and inner understanding. That experience continues to shape the way he teaches today.
While in India, he wrote several books under his guru’s name. These titles are still published by the Bihar School of Yoga and remain respected classics in the yoga world. In his final seven years in India, he traveled widely, giving yoga workshops in villages, towns, and cities, and became a sought-after teacher in the country where yoga was born.
In 1985, he returned to Europe and continued sharing the teachings he had received with Western seekers, with a strong emphasis on meditation and yoga-related subjects. The following year, in 1986, he established Mandala Yoga Ashram on a remote and semi-derelict Welsh hill farm belonging to his family. Courses began almost at once. Over time, a spiritual community formed around him, and the buildings were renovated and expanded to welcome more people. Since then, he has carefully developed the Ashram into the internationally respected center of yogic studies it is today.
Swami Nishchalananda brings together warmth, practical intelligence, and deep spirituality, allowing him to express the inner meaning of yoga with clarity and humanity. Without softening the teachings, he presents this ancient and time-tested spiritual science in a way that speaks to the modern mind.
He is far from the image of an austere yogi speaking only in riddles. Those who have spent time with him often describe him as inspiring, joyful, wise, compassionate, and wonderfully down to earth.
Although he has retired from day-to-day life at the Ashram, he continues to offer valuable guidance on subjects such as Kriya Yoga and the Chakras. During the pandemic, he offered free online satsangs, affectionately known as Zoomsangs, which included a talk, a short meditation, and a Q&A. These practical and still highly relevant teachings are available in the Zoomsang Library.
For those wishing to join live sessions with Swamiji, he continues to appear regularly in the online community, the Ashram Sangha, alongside other Ashram teachers.
