Rev. Shinmu Tamori Gibson

Description

Biography

Rev. Shinmu Tamori Gibson (心無 田守 ギブソン), formerly Jozen, is devoted to studying, nurturing, and sharing contemplative heart-body-mind practices rooted in compassionate wellness, anti-oppression, and interdependent liberation for all beings through the Buddhadharma.

Ordination and Lineage

Shinmu is a Sotō Zen monastic priest, ordained on November 12, 2023 by their teacher, Osho Zenju Earthlyn Manuel of the Suzuki Roshi lineage. They honor the wisdom and compassion of all teachers and future generations, as well as the ancestors of their Black Japanese heritage, and especially their mother, Akimi, and lay dharma teacher, Monitsu Pamela Weiss.

Training and Practice

Shinmu began formal meditation practice while living in Japan, where they were introduced to Early Buddhism and Theravada traditions, with a focus on Vipassana and Thai Forest lineages. They are a graduate of the four-year Insight Meditation Society (IMS)—Insight Retreat Center (IRC) Dharma Teacher Training program, and their studies in yoga, qigong, psychology, and emergency medicines support the unfolding of this life and the understanding of the noble truths.
