Born in 1947, Manuela Mahua Ahuanari carries forward a respected family lineage of Shipibo-Konibo healers from the upper and lower Ucayali regions of the Peruvian Amazon. She began learning from her father at just 13 years old and has since devoted more than 60 years to working with her ancestral medicine. Through decades of practice, she has developed a deep understanding of the natural pharmacy of her land and shares this knowledge with those who are ready to honor and continue the tradition.
Today, Manuela both heals and teaches Shipibo-Konibo people and international students alike. Her presence is known for warmth, generosity, and a genuinely uplifting spirit. Students are welcomed with personal care and attentive guidance, offered with the tenderness and wisdom of a great-grandmother. True to her Shipibo-Konibo name, Jakon Rate, she brings a life-giving sense of joy and surprise to everyone who has the opportunity to learn from her.
