Born in 1947, Manuela Mahua belongs to a respected lineage of Shipibo-Konibo healers from both the upper and lower Ucayali regions of the Peruvian Amazon. She began learning from her father at the age of 13 and has spent more than 60 years working with her ancestral medicine.
Today, she supports and teaches both Shipibo-Konibo people and international visitors, sharing a deep understanding of the natural pharmacy of her homeland. Her knowledge is offered with openness to those who are ready to commit to carrying the tradition forward.
Warm, generous, and deeply caring, Manuela brings a nurturing presence to every teaching. She gives each student personal attention and thoughtful care, reflecting the wisdom and tenderness of a great-grandmother. True to her Shipibo-Konibo name, Jakon Rate, she is a life-giving good surprise to all who meet and learn from her.
