Jock McKeen

Jock McKeen

Description

M.D., Lic.Ac.(UK), D.Litt., Jock McKeen studied at the College of Chinese Acupuncture in Oxford, England. Following his retirement from medical practice, he and Ben developed a deeply integrated approach to self-development, one that supports the whole person in body, mind, and spirit while encouraging personal responsibility in health, relationships, and lifestyle.

Over more than 40 years of professional collaboration, they have been invited to speak at conferences and lead workshops around the world. Their teaching has taken them throughout Asia and Europe, as well as to Russia, Africa, and South America, giving them a strong ease with cross-cultural perspectives. As consultants to agencies, corporations, and community groups, they have worked with people in many different settings, and both have also served on the boards of major corporations.

Their work has been shaped largely by close examination of their own relationship, along with the insights gained through years of work with clients. In a warm and personal style, they foster an atmosphere of trust and intimacy where each individual can grow and transform in their own way.

Their recent books include The Illuminated Heart: Perspectives on East-West Psychology and Thought (2012), Being: A Manual For Life (2013), and Joining: The Relationship Garden (2013). These titles, along with other books, are available online or at The Haven’s store on Gabriola Island.

In 2004, The Haven Foundation was created as a federally recognized Canadian nonprofit charity. Wong and McKeen, together with their three sons, transferred ownership of The Haven Institute to The Haven Foundation so the facility and their work could continue into the future. Both men now serve as Emeritus Faculty of The Haven Institute. In 2012, they received honorary Doctor of Letters degrees from Vancouver Island University in recognition of their role in establishing The Haven.

On March 18, 2013, The Haven served as host venue and sponsor for TEDxGabriolaIsland. Jock McKeen’s talk, A Dynamic Model of Empathy, was presented at that event.

Bennet Wong, known as Ben to family, friends, colleagues, students, and admirers, passed away in the Palliative Care Unit of Nanaimo General Hospital on the evening of Wednesday, September 25, 2013. He died from complications related to Parkinson’s disease.
