
Venerable Hoden Sunim brings more than four decades of dedicated study and practice in Zen, Buddhism, and martial arts to his teaching. Ordained as a monk in 2010 and as a Bhikkhu in 2016, he serves as Abbot and Guiding Teacher for Dharma Gate Zen, while also leading as Head Instructor of Homonji Iaido, the traditional Japanese sword arts.
His background combines deep spiritual training with strong academic achievement. Hoden Sunim graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Marygrove College in Detroit and earned an Associate’s Degree in Buddhist Studies from Dong-Bang Seminary in South Korea.
In addition to his teaching roles, he is the author of “Walk: A contemporary guide to the eightfold path” and “Awake: A contemporary guide to you”. His work reflects a lifelong commitment to clarity, discipline, and practical wisdom, offering students a grounded and inspiring approach to Zen practice and mindful living.
