Guru Swami Yogananda Ji Maharaj was born on 14 September 1908 in Madhya Pradesh. He began his yoga journey at the age of 17 and credited his strong health to the practice of Sukshumavyayam Yoga, an ancient system that blends gentle yogic warm-ups with soft stretches, breathwork, relaxation, and simple exercises.
Even at 106, Swamiji remained remarkably vital, with excellent eyesight and healthy teeth. He stood as a living example of the benefits of a regular yoga practice in daily life. He practiced Hatha Yoga in Rishikesh and taught Sukshumavyayam Yoga to students at Om Shanti Om Yoga Ashram every Sunday.
Throughout his 106 years on earth, Swami Yogananda Ji Maharaj never took medicine. Physically fit and mentally alert, he continued in this way until he attained Maha Samadhi on 3 January 2015.
