We’ll begin by reviewing material from the Trad is Rad class before moving into a deeper exploration of trad climbing techniques. The first day focuses on gear removal, clear communication, the overall rhythm of multi-pitch climbing, and hands-on practice with anchor setup and top belaying.
On day two, the group will split into teams of two for a multi-pitch climb, with an additional guide added so the ratio becomes 2:1. Students will have the opportunity to mock lead, build anchors, and belay one another during the climb.
Student-to-guide ratio: day 1, 4:1; day 2, 2:1.
Prerequisites for this class: at least a few consistent months of climbing experience, either indoors or outdoors; the ability to tie in and belay proficiently; and some familiarity with lead belaying or lead climbing, whether in the gym, sport, or trad.
Pricing is based on the student-to-guide ratio. A minimum of 3 participants is required for each class to run. The price includes two nights of camping, with the option to rent camping gear such as a tent and sleeping bag, plus 2 days of instruction and climbing.
Advanced Rock Craft Educational Program
These climbing classes are taught by Miranda Oakley with FIFTHclass Climbing School in the Eastern Sierra Nevada.
Created for climbers who want continuing education and mentorship as they work toward their goals, this program reflects years of teaching, guiding, and climbing experience. Miranda has developed a hands-on curriculum designed to support participants under the safety and supervision of an AMGA certified guide.
As climbing continues to grow in popularity, more people than ever are pursuing ambitious objectives. With fatal climbing accidents in Yosemite National Park averaging two per year, the need for mentorship and instruction has never been greater—not only to help climbers stay safe, but also to reinforce strong climbing ethics and reduce environmental impact as the sport expands.
These classes encourage students to prioritize learning over summits. The focus is on growth, not just reaching the top. There is no shame in backing off a big climb; in many cases, we learn more from choosing to bail than from making the summit. If you are safe, learning something meaningful, and having fun, then the climb is a success.
