We’ll begin by reviewing material from the Trad is Rad class, then move further into the skills and flow of trad climbing. Topics will include removing trad gear, clear communication, and the overall rhythm of multi-pitch climbing. Students will also practice building an anchor and belaying from above.
On the second day, the group will split into two teams of two, and we’ll head out for a multi-pitch climb with an additional guide joining so the ratio becomes 2:1. During the climb, students will have the opportunity to mock lead, build anchors, and belay one another.
Student-to-guide ratio: day 1, 4:1; day 2, 2:1
Prerequisites for this class: at least a few consistent months of climbing experience, either indoors or outdoors; ability to tie in and belay confidently; and some experience with lead belaying or lead climbing in the gym, sport, or trad.
Pricing is based on the student-to-guide ratio. A minimum of 3 participants is required for each class to run. The price includes two nights of camping, with the option to rent camping gear such as a tent and sleeping bag, plus 2 days of instruction and climbing.
Advanced Rock Craft Educational Program
These climbing classes are taught by Miranda Oakley with FIFTHclass Climbing School in the Eastern Sierra Nevada.
The program was created to offer ongoing education for climbers looking for mentorship as they work toward their climbing goals. Drawing on years of teaching, guiding, and climbing experience, Miranda has developed hands-on class curricula that allow participants to learn under the safety and supervision of an AMGA certified guide.
In recent years, climbing has grown tremendously in popularity, with more people than ever pursuing ambitious objectives. With fatal climbing accidents in Yosemite NP averaging two per year, mentorship and skills-based classes are more important than ever—not only for safety, but also for learning strong climbing ethics and reducing environmental impact as the sport continues to expand.
These classes encourage learning-focused goals rather than summit-focused ones. The emphasis should be on growth, not ego; there is no shame in backing off a big climb. We often learn more from retreating than from reaching the top. If you stay safe, gain something meaningful, and enjoy the process, your climb is a success.
