Discover the world that appears between the tides.
Kachemak Bay is known for some of the largest tidal swings on the planet, uncovering a rich intertidal ecosystem twice each day. When the tide is low, the shoreline in front of Stillpoint transforms into a living classroom filled with sea stars, anemones, sea cucumbers, chitons, urchins, crabs, and nudibranchs.
These guided tidepool explorations invite guests to slow down, observe closely, and learn how these remarkable creatures adapt to extreme conditions and dramatic tidal changes.
Small Wonders, Big Magic
Low tide is the best time for tidepooling, when the retreating water reveals a hidden world of sea stars, sea cucumbers, opalescent nudibranchs, anemones, chitons, decorator crabs, urchins, sponges, mussels, and other shellfish—and, if you’re lucky, even an elusive octopus. The lower the tide, the more there is to see. Join one of our guides to explore tidepools alive with activity, along with other fascinating marine life such as birds and mammals along the way.

Why Kachemak Bay is So Special
Kachemak Bay’s intertidal zone supports an extraordinary range of marine life, revealed in vivid detail at low tide. The average vertical difference between high and low tide is about 15 feet, with average high tides near 18 feet. During peak extremes, tides can reach up to 28 feet, leaving the water in Halibut Cove around Stillpoint Lodge only a few feet deep at the corresponding low tide.
