Sketching & Painting Retreats

Guided by trained artist David Read, this sketching and painting retreat offers four days of creative exploration in a variety of inspiring settings. Designed as a long weekend escape, it brings together artists of all levels and styles to create memories and artworks using the mediums you prefer. David will be available throughout to offer one-to-one guidance and inspiration.

Arrive at El Cipreret on Wednesday afternoon or evening, then take time to settle in and enjoy the peaceful setting of Serra de Mariola Natural Park.

Day 1

After a delicious breakfast, we will take a short drive down the mountain to the medieval village of Bocairent. Wander through the historic square and streets before choosing your favourite spot to sit and sketch or paint. Bocairent has a wonderfully atmospheric character, and it is easy to imagine the narrow lanes as they once were, filled with chickens and donkeys.

We will return to El Cipreret for a leisurely lunch, after which you are free to continue with your artwork or make the most of the excellent facilities available at Mariola Secreta.

Day 2

Today we travel for around thirty minutes through the mountain gorge to Pou Clar on the edge of Ontinyent. If you are lucky along the way, you may spot the local wild goat herd clinging to the cliffs, or even a wild Mouflon. Pou Clar is a beautiful riverside location with a series of clear turquoise pools, gentle waterfalls, and pink oleander. Bring your swimwear, as the mountain water is cool but wonderfully refreshing on a hot day.

Once again, we return to El Cipreret for lunch, and your afternoon is free. David will, of course, be available if you would like to spend more time on one-to-one advice.

Day 3

A relaxed day at El Cipreret and in the surrounding park gives you the chance to capture the ever-cheerful sunflower fields, the wider landscape, or even try some life drawing.

We also have a wide selection of mountain bikes for hire, including ebikes. If you feel like something more active today, Ben will lead a guided cross-country ride.

Day 4

To round off the trip and make the most of the area’s rich habitat diversity, we will spend the morning in the mountains nearby. Dramatic rocky gorges and soaring cliffs are home to Griffon Vultures. We will return to El Cipreret in time to enjoy Mariola Secreta’s hospitality over a leisurely home-cooked lunch.

We recommend an evening flight home or a transfer to your next destination so you can fully enjoy your four-day retreat. Please ask if you would like to extend your retreat by one extra night.

During your stay, you will enjoy full-board accommodation and access to the excellent facilities of Mariola Secreta. El Cipreret, our fully restored farmhouse, is located in the heart of Serra de Mariola Natural Park, Valencia.
