When a partner is injured, you rappel past the anchor, or the terrain simply becomes too difficult to continue, knowing a few essential techniques can turn a serious problem into a manageable setback. In this clinic, you’ll practice the skills needed to keep both you and your climbing partner safe when a multi-pitch climb doesn’t go according to plan.
The class covers the technical tools used to prevent accidents and respond effectively if they happen. You’ll learn how to rig multi-pitch rappels for both safety and efficiency, while also reviewing the most common ways climbing accidents occur and how to avoid them. If something does go wrong, you’ll work through practical solutions for handling it. A solid foundation in anchor building and gear placements, along with some multi-pitch experience, is required.
Student to guide ratio 4:1
This is an intermediate/advanced level clinic. Prerequisites: Intro to Multi-pitch clinic, plus personal multi-pitch experience (sport or trad) OR multi-pitch experience, including the ability to build an equalized anchor, belay from above and set-up a rappel without coaching.
Advanced Rock Craft Educational Program
Climbing classes are taught by Miranda Oakley with FIFTHclass Climbing School in the Eastern Sierra Nevada.
This program was created to offer continuing education for climbers who want mentorship while working toward their climbing goals. Drawing on years of teaching, guiding, and climbing experience, Miranda has developed hands-on curricula that allow participants to learn under the safety and supervision of an AMGA certified guide.
As climbing has grown rapidly in recent years, more people than ever are pursuing ambitious objectives in the mountains. With fatal climbing accidents in Yosemite NP averaging two per year, the need for mentorship and instruction is greater than ever—not only to help keep climbers safe, but also to reinforce strong climbing ethics and reduce environmental impact as the sport expands.
These classes encourage students to focus on learning rather than summit success. The emphasis should shift; there is no shame in backing off a big climb. In fact, we often learn more from turning around than from reaching the top. If you stay safe, learn something meaningful, and have fun, then the climb is a success.
*Pricing is based on the ratio of students per guide. A minimum of 3 participants is required for each class to run. Price includes camping for two nights, with the option to rent camping gear (tent and sleeping bag), plus 2 days of instruction and climbing.
