If your partner is injured, you’ve rappelled past the anchor, or the terrain simply becomes too difficult to manage, a few essential techniques can mean the difference between a minor setback and needing a rescue. In this clinic, you’ll practice the skills that help you and your climbing partner reach safety when a multi-pitch climb doesn’t go according to plan.
The course covers the technical knowledge needed to prevent accidents and respond effectively if they happen. You’ll learn how to set up multi-pitch rappels for greater safety and efficiency, while also reviewing the most common ways accidents occur and how to avoid them. You’ll also work through the steps to handle these situations if they arise. Prerequisites include a solid foundation in anchor building and gear placements, along with some multi-pitch climbing experience.
Student-to-guide ratio: 4:1
This is an intermediate/advanced-level clinic. Prerequisites: Intro to Multi-pitch clinic, plus personal multi-pitch experience (sport or trad) OR multi-pitch experience, including the ability to build an equalized anchor, belay from above, and set up a rappel without coaching.
Advanced Rock Craft Educational Program
Climbing classes taught by Miranda Oakley with FIFTHclass Climbing School in the Eastern Sierra Nevada.
Created to support climbers who want ongoing education and mentorship as they pursue their goals, this program offers hands-on learning under the safety and supervision of an AMGA certified guide. Drawing on years of teaching, guiding, and climbing experience, Miranda has developed a curriculum designed to help participants build skills with confidence.
As climbing has surged in popularity, more people than ever are taking on ambitious objectives. With fatal climbing accidents in Yosemite NP averaging two per year, the need for mentorship and instruction is greater than ever—not only to support climber safety, but also to reinforce strong climbing ethics and reduce environmental impact as the sport continues to grow.
These classes encourage learning-focused goals rather than summit-focused ones. The emphasis must shift: there is no shame in bailing off a big climb. In many cases, we learn more from turning back than from reaching the top. If you stay safe, learn something meaningful, and have fun, then your climbing is a success.
*Pricing is based on the ratio of students per guide. A minimum of 3 participants is required for each class to run. Price includes two nights of camping, with the option to rent camping gear (tent and sleeping bag), plus 2 days of instruction and climbing.
