One of the first lessons I learned on the path of healing and spiritual coaching was how essential it is to create trust quickly. Every client is different, and their need for connection will vary. Years of volunteering at a hospice bedside taught me to read the energy of a room and notice how my own internal state shifted as I entered each space and responded to the body language, tone, and presence of the person I was with. That mindful experience later became a foundation for the teaching, mentoring, and support I offered others on their healing journey.
One of the techniques I share is mirroring, also known as building rapport. At its heart, this is the art of creating a natural sense of connection so the client feels understood, safe, and supported. When rapport is established early, the healing process can deepen more easily and communication begins to flow with greater ease.
Mirroring is a subtle form of matching another person’s body language and verbal expression. This may include words, gestures, posture, breathing rhythm, or even leg position. The key is to remain discreet; if the imitation is too obvious, it can have the opposite effect and make the person feel uncomfortable or mocked.
As your skill develops, you begin by pacing the client, gently following their lead. Over time, you can introduce small leading gestures and observe whether they naturally follow. For example, if someone is tapping their foot, you might tap your fingers and see whether they shift to your rhythm. You may also subtly lower the pitch of your voice or change your blinking pattern to invite a similar response.
Once rapport is in place, you can guide the client more deeply into their experience through hypnotherapeutic techniques, autosuggestion, guided imagery, or other re-entrainment processes. In this way, trust becomes the doorway to deeper healing. It can also help support a more receptive state for energy healing or shamanic healing work.
Another powerful aspect of rapport is similarity. When I share an experience that reflects something the client has lived through, it can help them feel less alone and more hopeful. People naturally connect with those who seem to understand them, and that sense of recognition can open the door to greater honesty and trust.
Common ground can also be found through shared interests such as travel, fashion, music, sport, or reading. At the same time, it is usually wise to avoid areas that may create distance, such as religion or politics, unless the client brings them up in a meaningful way.
Language matters as well. If a client describes themselves as “sad,” it is often best to use that same word rather than substituting “unhappy.” If they say “angry,” mirror that language instead of softening it to “frustrated.” Using their own words helps them feel heard, respected, and in control.
You can also mirror tone and pace. If their voice becomes more animated, a similar response can deepen the connection. A flat, unchanging tone, on the other hand, may interrupt the energy they are expressing. Even a small shift in language, rhythm, or emphasis can transform the quality of a session.
Sometimes I gently invite clients to move from “think” to “feel,” which can bring them more into the body and heart. This should always be done with care and respect for their preferred way of speaking. I may ask, “Would you be willing to use the word feel when describing that experience?” so they still remain in control of the process.
Repeating a significant word they have used, especially one carrying emotion, can help them feel deeply acknowledged and encourage them to continue. Even a thoughtful pause can create space for more to emerge. When used skillfully, simple mirroring and tonal shifts can change the direction of a conversation or session in powerful ways.
