Mantra, meditation, and contemplation come together during the Saga Dawa month in June at Ganden Chökhor. This gathering includes the initiation of Buddha Ushnisha Vijaya transcendent wisdom with Lodrö Tulku Rinpoche, along with a short commentary and intensive practice. Each year, Lodrö Tulku Rinpoche leads an Ushnisha Vijaya meditation based on four disciplines from the Tibetan monastery Samdup Gompa.
Ushnisha Vijaya is the fourth Tara among the 21 Taras, a female Buddha of wisdom and long life. Buddha Shakyamuni taught the dharani of the white female Buddha Ushnishavijaya Tara directly through his ushnisha, the crown protrusion. The ushnisha can replace the voice of the Buddha, yet for us humans this communication is not easy to understand. The veils of ignorance stand in the way. To help beings cross the ocean of samsara, the Buddha offers this method of communication.
Deep wisdom and understanding of emptiness are the central aspects of the practice. In Tibet, it was widely used to support the extension of life, and many realized masters later spoke about it. Such aims and experiences require compassion and wisdom, regular practice, connection, deep trust, and devotion to the Buddha’s teachings.
Lodrö Rinpoche will also explain the Ushnishavijaya ritual of “4 times 1000,” which was performed annually at his home monastery, Samdup Gompa, the wish-fulfilling monastery in East Tibet. The practice also includes the longevity stupa at Ganden Chökhor, dedicated to Buddha Ushnisha Vijaya. Everyone is welcome.
