The loss of a child can open a deep and lasting well of grief. Whether the death was sudden or gradual, through illness, accident, miscarriage, abortion, or suicide, the sorrow may remain profound for a long time.
To support families and friends in their grieving process, we honor the child who has died by taking part in a ceremony in the Jizo Bodhisattva remembrance garden. Jizo Bodhisattva is considered a guardian of women, travelers, and children who have died. During the ceremony, participants create a personal memorial for their loved one by writing a message, making a simple toy or necklace, or sewing a small garment. Materials will be available, though you may also wish to bring scissors, thread and needle, and a small piece of red cloth. Many people bring a photograph or another meaningful token of remembrance. These memorials are then placed on the Jizo statues. Families and friends are welcome to return to the garden at any time.
The ceremony is simple and held in silence.
People of all religious backgrounds are welcome.
