Take on one of Bali’s most meaningful ascents: a challenging night hike paired with a deeply spiritual journey to the summit of Mount Agung, the island’s sacred mountain.
Begin in the early hours, around 2.00am, with a 45-minute drive to Pasar Agung Temple. From there, the climb starts with prayers to seek permission from the gods and to prepare your spirit for entering what the Balinese regard as the spiritual heart of the island. As you set out, you are invited to meditate, pray, and set your intention at the beginning, at the summit, and again on the return.
The route rises first through trees along a winding path, then continues above the tree line where the terrain becomes stony. The final stretch across boulders and scree is demanding, but the reward is exceptional. At sunrise, enjoy breakfast at the summit with spectacular views across Bali and Lombok, along with sweeping vistas into the volcano crater. Breathe the rarefied air and bracing skies of the abode of the gods, and let the breaking day become a new dawn within yourself.
The descent is also challenging, especially on the knees and leg muscles, yet the changing views and terrain bring a different kind of beauty on the way down. You return tired but renewed, with time to relax, recover, and perhaps enjoy a massage for sore legs.

A Word from the FounderIn January 1995, a decisive moment led to the creation of Nirarta.
