Mindfulness for a Busy World
“A coherent, compelling and common-sensical programme for anyone caring about his or her own health and sanity, especially in this increasingly fast-paced and frantic world.”
– Jon Kabat-Zinn
Created by Prof. Mark Williams and Danny Penman at the Oxford Mindfulness Centre, this programme was designed to be both effective and accessible for people who may not have time to complete the full MBSR or MBCT courses. Drawing on the core principles of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), it offers shorter weekly sessions and a lighter home practice commitment, making it a less intensive introduction to bringing mindfulness into everyday wellbeing.
Many participants who complete the course choose to continue their learning through the MBSR programme or attend retreats, deepening their practice and sustaining mindfulness as an important part of their wellbeing. The course is also available for groups, including community and workplace settings, to support broader health and wellbeing initiatives.
Why take this course?
Taking part may help you become more aware of your present-moment experience, feel calmer and more fulfilled, and discover ways to relate better with others and work more effectively. It is also designed to strengthen resilience in the face of stress and difficulty. The focus is on helping adults develop a personal mindfulness practice that can be carried into everyday life, often influencing both personal and professional ways of being.
Practical Mindfulness Lessons
Each class lasts 1.5 hours, and the course introduces mindfulness in practical, approachable, and even enjoyable ways. It may be offered in 6 or 8 sessions and includes:
As with any new skill, this work takes practice and commitment. Learning in a structured way, with guidance and supportive company along the way, has been shown in research to offer the best outcomes for health and wellbeing.
*The 6-session format includes key elements of sessions 6-7-8 across sessions 5-6.
Sessions
Session 1
Waking up to autopilot
The course begins by exploring the human tendency to run on automatic pilot. We practice paying attention in new ways and notice what changes when we step out of habitual mode.
Session 2
Bringing curiosity to experience
Here we look at the evolution of the mind and discover how the body can serve as both an anchor to the present and a radar for important messages.
Session 3
Mindfulness in daily life
Mindfulness can be woven through ordinary activities throughout the day, helping us build flexibility and transform the ordinary into something more meaningful.
Session 4
Moving beyond the rumour mill
This session invites us to see thoughts as creations of the mind rather than facts. We learn to recognise habitual patterns and how strongly they influence mood and behaviour.
Session 5
Exploring difficulty, building resilience
Building on the first four sessions, we are invited to turn toward and befriend aspects of experience that we usually avoid or resist. Practising in this way helps strengthen resilience.
Session 6
Kindness to ourselves and others
Relationships can be both rewarding and challenging. In this session, we bring mindful awareness to habitual ways of relating and open to more supportive ways of flourishing.
Session 7
Developing balance in our lives
This session reflects on how we can choose our actions and daily habits in ways that nourish us more fully.
Session 8
Mindfulness and the rest of your life
We celebrate the completion of the course and reflect on what we are taking forward, as well as how mindfulness can fit into the rest of life. Life is the curriculum.
