In-person 4-Day/3-Night Working Retreat
There is a rich creative territory between picture books and full-length novels—one where the word count stays focused, yet the storytelling potential remains wide open. This space includes level readers, early readers, and chapter books, many of which also feature spot illustrations or graphic panels.
Designed for writers and illustrators, this retreat offers a chance to dive into that in-between world alongside authors and illustrators Kaz Windness and Vicky Fang, with special guest Anne Appert.
Come with an idea, a draft, or simply questions. Through hands-on sessions, generative exercises, and supportive guidance, you’ll learn more about the needs of this market and how to create with transitional readers in mind. You’ll also have generous time to step away and focus on your own writing, illustrating, and creative work.
This in-person retreat is for creators interested in publishing opportunities between picture books and novels.
One-on-one consultations will help you determine which ideas are worth developing and what your next steps might be on the path to publication.
No submission required.
Lodging and meals are included.
Begins at 5:30pm Eastern on Friday, October 23
Ends after lunch Monday, October 26
Informal roundtable discussions will offer space to talk through the changes you’ve made to your work-in-progress during the retreat.
You’ll also have informal opportunities for feedback and time to share work during generative creative exercises, as well as while connecting with fellow attendees.
Our mission is to positively impact children by amplifying the voices of storytellers who inform, educate, and inspire children to become their best selves. New readers immerse themselves in characters they love, series they care about, and reflections of their world. This retreat is designed to show you how to craft stories for this age so kids can fall in love with reading.
Before the event, you’ll receive access to our virtual classroom, where you can introduce yourself to fellow creatives and explore Boyds Mills-related resources, including our Community Standards.
All-inclusive registration includes workshop tuition, lodging, meals, beverages, and snacks.
