Yoga therapy represents the next natural step in the evolution of teaching. In many cases, yoga teachers already take on a therapeutic role: when practices are adapted to support specific health concerns, or when alternate nostril breathing and other pranayama techniques are offered to help with issues such as sinus discomfort, that guidance moves into yoga therapy territory.
The line between yoga teacher and yoga therapist is becoming increasingly fluid, and more teachers are finding themselves expected to respond to health-related needs. Many say they simply want to know which yoga practices are most appropriate for different conditions.
As healthcare systems look for more cost-effective ways to support wellbeing, it is no surprise that more people are being referred to yoga as part of their recovery and ongoing care.
