Our Digestive Health & IBS Program is created for guests who experience ongoing digestive discomfort such as IBS-like symptoms, acidity/GERD, chronic constipation, bloating, and gas, and who are looking for a natural, structured way to reset gut health in a peaceful Kerala retreat setting.
In Ayurveda, most digestive concerns are linked to the condition of agni, or digestive fire, and the accumulation of ama, the toxic residue that can build up when digestion is not functioning well. At Elephant Pass, this understanding is applied through a doctor-led, personalised program that brings together diet, mild Panchakarma, herbs, yoga, and mindful routines to support lasting digestive balance.
This program is not intended for suspected or diagnosed cancer, active bleeding ulcers, acute surgical conditions, or severe inflammatory bowel disease, which require hospital-based care.
Ayurveda places digestion at the center of health. When agni is strong and balanced, food is properly transformed into nourishment; when it is disturbed, ama may form and affect wellbeing.
Classically, four states of agni are described:
When agni remains disturbed for too long, ama can irritate the gut lining, disrupt motility and absorption, and contribute to IBS-like symptoms, reflux, and chronic constipation.
The program is customised by the Ayurvedic doctor after reviewing your symptoms, dosha state, diet, stress patterns, and, where available, medical reports. Common elements include:
A simple, freshly cooked vegetarian diet is tailored to your dominant pattern and IBS type.
Focus is placed on:
The aim is to gently reset agni and reduce irritation, not to follow extreme or fashionable diets.
For guests who are strong enough and suitable for cleansing, the doctor may recommend mild Panchakarma as a gut-focused approach:
These therapies are used only after proper preparation and assessment.
Depending on your pattern, the doctor may prescribe classical herbal preparations or combinations that strengthen agni, aid digestion, improve motility and absorption, and soothe the gut lining.
Examples used in practice include Triphala for gentle bowel regulation and detox, Bilva-based preparations in some IBS and diarrhoea-dominant cases, and spices such as ginger, cumin, fennel, and ajwain when appropriate.
Because stress and emotions strongly affect IBS and digestion, the program includes gentle yoga poses, breathing exercises, relaxation, and simple mindfulness around eating to support the gut-brain axis.
Guests who complete a digestive-focused retreat and follow post-stay guidance often notice more regular bowel movements, less bloating and gas, improved appetite, a lighter feeling after meals, and steadier energy throughout the day.
Long-term stability depends on how consistently you apply the food and lifestyle principles learned during your stay.
