The leaf reader

Within Andean tradition, the leaf reader, known in some regions as a runa, plays an important role in interpreting signs and symbols related to everyday matters. This form of reading does not require formal specialization and focuses on practical concerns such as weather forecasts, the success of travel, visits from friends or family, and small business transactions.

Some specialists in this practice have earned recognition and prestige in their communities for their skill and accuracy. These readers are often supported by a protective allied spirit, known as an apu, which assists them in their work.

In Cusco, Peru, they are called qhawaq; in Ayacucho, qatipaq; in Bolivia, amauta; and in Aymara communities, yaratiri.

The sacred cloth in spiritual healing

Function and meaning: In Andean spiritual healing practices, a traditional cloth is used to place the items needed for the consultation. This cloth, locally known as an unqhuña, may be replaced by other woven blankets or ponchos if necessary. Handkerchiefs or even the client’s shirt may also be used, as noted by Peruvian writer Ricardo Palma.

The sacred cloth serves not only as a physical surface for the consultation items, but also as a sacred element that connects the reader with the surrounding energies. Handwoven using ancestral techniques, it adds an important ritual dimension, creating a space that supports concentration and the interpretation of spiritual signs. The careful preparation of this space reflects the seriousness and respect with which the consultation is approached, forming a link between the reader, the client, and the spiritual world.

Spiritual interpretation

In Andean tradition, spiritual interpretation involves observing several aspects of how the leaves are arranged on the cloth. Points to consider include the dominant color, the condition of the leaves, whether they are folded or not, their integrity, and the direction of their tips. These details help answer the questions being asked.

The responses may be open and descriptive, affirmative, negative, or contradictory. The reader, known as a qhawaq, throws a handful of leaves and gathers answers until a complete interpretation emerges. This process makes it possible to confirm or challenge the initial responses, offering a more complete view.

Diagnosis

In traditional Andean medicine, coca leaf reading is used to identify imbalances in health and to guide appropriate therapies. A specialist may recommend traditional treatments or, when needed, refer the person to conventional medicine for more specialized care.

This process goes beyond divination, as it creates a deep interaction between humans and non-human beings such as Pachamama, the apus, and other spirits. Within Andean cosmology, these forces are seen as active participants in the well-being and health of the community.
