Deepening the practice of silence
With Swami SatyaDaya, Swami Krishnaprem, and Tulsi
This 10-day retreat offers a rare chance to immerse yourself in mouna, the discipline of silence, within the peaceful atmosphere of the Ashram and with the guidance of experienced teachers.
Listen to silence; it has so much to say
Rumi
In a world that moves quickly and constantly demands our attention, we are often surrounded not only by external noise, but also by the inner noise of thoughts, reactions, and mental chatter.
The practice of silence creates space for the mind and emotions to settle. It invites us into a deeper stillness beneath the surface activity, where we can rest, renew our energy, and experience a quiet form of refreshment.
Silence also supports self-inquiry, insight, and a more direct connection with the deeper layers of our being. From this stillness, inspiration and creativity can arise naturally, along with a greater openness to the heart and intuition.
Each day begins with a guided yoga class, followed by chanting and meditation. During meditation, a theme will be introduced for reflection throughout the day.
There will also be regular periods of shared stillness lasting 45 minutes. Each afternoon includes a two-hour guided session combining asana practice, yoga nidra, and related meditation and pranayama techniques. In addition, there will be satsang, opportunities for one-to-one guidance and sharing with one of the teachers, and the daily practice of karma yoga.

At Our Unique Spiritual Sanctuary In The Heart Of Wales
Our residential retreats offer a rare opportunity to explore the deeper dimensions of yoga in one of the few authentic ashrams outside India. With experienced teachers, a supportive community, and an environment of natural beauty and focused spiritual energy, this is a place to go inward with care and intention.
A Spiritual Sanctuary
As one of the few authentic ashrams outside India, we offer a living connection between the teachings of the yogic sages and sincere seekers in the modern world. Founded in 1986, the Ashram has supported profound learning and transformation for thousands of people from many different backgrounds.
Set among the green hills of Wales in the UK, the Ashram is a natural sanctuary and a peaceful haven.
This setting offers a quiet, safe, and nurturing environment in which to engage deeply with the teachings and practices of yoga.
All courses are guided and taught by our senior teachers, who together bring nearly 100 years of yoga teaching experience.
The ashram is also supported by a resident team of yogis who serve in the spirit of enquiry and dedication, many of whom are trained yoga teachers or currently in training.
Below is our standard retreat timetable, the basic format that most of our retreats follow. Please be aware that this may vary slightly from retreat to retreat, but rarely by very much.
General Retreat Timetable
Mouna
Mouna refers to periods of silence during which we continue our yoga practice and daily life without speaking. It is an essential part of ashram life.
At the ashram, mouna is observed every day from 9pm until breakfast the next morning, during the first half of lunch and supper, and for longer periods on certain courses and residential retreats.
Karma Yoga
Karma yoga is an invaluable part of our retreats and of ashram life more broadly. It is the practice of doing work in the spirit of service and awareness, and it is a fundamental aspect of yoga that is often overlooked.
On a practical level, this may include gardening, cooking, housework, or maintaining the buildings—whatever is needed at the time. On a deeper level, karma yoga means being fully engaged in the task while remaining connected with our inner being.
Some visitors arrive having already spent time in other ashrams or spiritual communities, while for others this may be a completely new experience. In either case, we encourage you to come with an open mind and a willingness to make the most of your time here.
You may also wish to familiarise yourself with the Ashram and the rhythm of life here if you are considering attending a retreat.
If you are planning a visit, there are several practical details to consider, including how to get here, what to bring, food and drink, Ashram rules and regulations, and more.
While every effort is made to keep the ashram as safe as possible and to make our retreats accessible to as many people as possible, by taking part you accept responsibility for your own health and safety.
Please make sure you are fit and well enough to participate in yoga practice. If necessary, seek medical advice before undertaking any yoga practice, including asana, meditation, pranayama, and Yoga Nidra.
As part of the booking process, you will be asked to inform us of any physical or mental health circumstances that could be affected by the practices offered on your chosen course. Mandala Yoga Ashram accepts no responsibility for injury resulting from failure to follow teacher instructions or from non-disclosure of medical conditions, injury, or physical impairment.
If you are in any doubt, please obtain specialist or professional advice from your doctor before participating, as we are not qualified to determine whether you are fit to safely take part in any sessions.
To reserve a place on one of our retreats, a non-refundable deposit is required at the time of booking, with the balance due before the retreat begins or on arrival.
All deposits are non-refundable and non-transferable. If a course or stay booking is cancelled, the deposit will be lost. Cancellations may be made by phone, email, or in writing. Cancellations made less than 4 weeks before the course start date will incur a percentage of the course cost; full details are available under our Terms and Conditions.
We offer three payment options for our courses so that we can meet our costs and continue to thrive while remaining accessible. We trust visitors to choose the tier that best reflects their circumstances.
Benefactor – for those with the means and generosity to pay a little extra as a way of supporting others in a less secure financial position.
Standard – the standard tier, calculated to ensure the Ashram meets its essential running costs year after year.
Supported – for those who genuinely need assistance in order to attend a retreat, and therefore pay a lower cost.
This is a new change in 2024/2025.
