The history of cacao ceremonies

Cacao has been used for thousands of years in Mayan and Aztec traditions across Central and South America. Within these rituals, it was connected with spiritual growth, inner awakening, and creative inspiration. Is ceremonial cacao the same as chocolate?

Not exactly. The cacao used in ceremonies tastes very different from regular drinking chocolate or hot chocolate. It is the natural essence of the plant. The same beans are used for chocolate, but chocolate usually contains only 20–30% cacao. Ceremonial cacao is prepared from pure cacao beans, cacao butter, and spices, with a little honey added if needed, along with water. The resulting drink often tastes unusually bitter, yet it is also rich in iron, magnesium, and B vitamins.
