




Batik is a traditional textile art that uses wax and dye to form intricate designs on fabric such as cotton, silk, linen, or rayon.
With roots in Java, Indonesia, this technique dates back to at least the 12th century, although some historians believe it was already widely practiced before then. By the early 1800s, batik had reached Europe, and it was featured at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900.
The method shares some similarities with silk painting, using wax as a resist. While the process is fairly straightforward, it differs slightly from one region to another, with artists across Asia and Africa developing their own distinctive approaches to batik on fabric.
