This 3-day desert journey from Marrakesh to Fes via the Sahara offers an unforgettable crossing of Morocco’s most striking landscapes. Travel through the High Atlas Mountains and Ouarzazate, then discover the UNESCO-listed Ait Benhaddou, the Roses Valley, Dades Valley, and Dades Gorge before arriving in Merzouga for a camel trek across the dunes. Spend one night in a desert camp surrounded by sand, then continue north toward Fes via Erfoud, Ziz Valley, Midelt, and Azrou. Along the way, you’ll explore the Cedar Forest and stop in Ifrane, often called the Moroccan Switzerland, before reaching your final destination.
After meeting at the agreed location, your 3-day desert tour begins with a scenic drive southeast through the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi-n-Tichka pass, where panoramic views and traditional Berber villages line the route. The first major stop is Ait Benhaddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage site, followed by time for lunch. The trip then continues toward Dades Valley, passing Atlas Studios, Ouarzazate, known as the Hollywood of Africa, and the fragrant Roses Valley before arrival. Overnight accommodation is in a hotel or riad.
After breakfast, the drive heads toward the Erg Chebbi dunes, passing through Berber villages including Tinghir, Tinjdad, and Erfoud, the gateway to the desert. On arrival in Merzouga, there is time to rest before setting off on camelback into the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi. Travel onward across the Tizi N'talghamt pass through the Middle Atlas Mountains, with visits to the Cedar Forest of Azrou, home to Barbary apes, and the alpine town of Ifrane before reaching Fes.
