Dorjé Lopön Dr. Lye (he/him) was raised in a Buddhist household in Malaysia, where his connection to the path began early through study and practice with teachers from several traditions. As an undergraduate in the United States, he met his first Tibetan teacher, a formative encounter that deepened his dedication to Dharma. He later earned a doctorate in Buddhist Studies from the University of Virginia and spent ten years teaching in American academic institutions before leaving academia to focus fully on Dharma work.
In 2013, Dr. Lye was appointed Dorjé Lopön, or “vajra-master,” of the Drikung Kagyü Lineage by His Holiness Drikung Kyabgön Chetsang Rinpoché and was formally enthroned in his hometown of Penang, Malaysia. Today, he teaches, leads retreats, and serves the Lineage across Asia, North America, and South America. He is also the founder and spiritual director of Urban Dharma North Carolina in Asheville, where he continues to share his deep commitment to Buddhist practice and guidance.
