A spiritual journey into Peru’s hidden landscapes
For travelers looking beyond the usual highlights, Waqrapukara offers a striking alternative to Machu Picchu. With impressive Inca ruins, sweeping scenery, and far fewer crowds, this full-day trek is considered one of the most rewarding excursions from Cusco. The experience is led by a spiritual guide from our team, bringing together adventure, ancestral knowledge, and a deep connection to the surrounding land.
Cusco – Waqrapukara – Cusco
The day begins with hotel pick-up, followed by a drive of approximately 2 hours to Pomacanchi, located at 3,700 m / 12,139 ft, where a local family will welcome you with breakfast. From there, the journey continues for another 2 hours toward Waqrapukara, passing through dramatic scenery and the Apurimac Canyon.
At the trailhead, the hike starts with a scenic walk of about 1 hour, including a short 20-minute uphill section that offers one of the most direct and beautiful routes to Waqrapukara. Once at the top, there is time to take photos and enjoy the panoramic views. The final 15-minute walk leads to the archaeological site at 4,140 m / 13,583 ft, where you will enjoy a guided visit and have time to explore and capture more images.
After the visit, the route returns along the same trail to the starting point, where transportation will be waiting. On the way back to Cusco, there is a lunch stop in Pomacanchi before continuing the final 2-hour drive. It is a relaxed yet memorable day that combines mountain landscapes, local culture, and historical discovery.

We recommend packing comfortable trekking clothing, sturdy hiking boots, a backpack, a hat, sunscreen, a water bottle, insect repellent, a rain jacket, and any personal medication. It is also a good idea to carry some local currency for small purchases.
The dry season, from May to September, is generally the best time to visit because the weather is more stable and the trails are less muddy. That said, Waqrapukara can be visited throughout the year.
Yes. This trek is designed to go beyond standard tourism. You will share meals with a local Andean family and gain insight into their traditions. Our spiritual guide will share perspectives on Inca history and Andean cosmovision, and the experience includes a brief ancestral blessing ceremony to set intentions and connect with Pachamama, Mother Nature in Quechua. This adds a meaningful spiritual layer to the journey.
Waqrapukara is deeply rooted in Inca history and once served as a fortress, sanctuary, and observatory. Its mountain setting, detailed architecture, and the Quechua name “Horn Fortress” all speak to its significance. Today, it remains important for indigenous Andean communities and for visitors seeking a deeper connection to ancient traditions. Aligned with celestial events, it stands as a sacred place where the earthly and spiritual realms meet.
