“There is nothing new under the sun, but there are new suns.” — Octavia Estelle Butler
Built around Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents, this year-long cohort invites participants into a deep, sustained exploration of Butler’s prophetic vision. In conversation with her unforgettable protagonist, Lauren Olamina, we will study these novels as guides for understanding the instability of our present moment, imagining a future worth building, and learning how to support one another—and our communities—through the process.
Over the course of the year, we will come together in several ways:
Each participant will be supported in developing and completing a project inspired by the novels and the cohort experience. Your project may take the form of a zine, an art or theater piece, an organizing project, writing, or something else entirely—the direction and scope are up to you.
Throughout the year, a range of optional retreats will be offered to deepen learning and support project development. Possible themes include the theology of the Parables, imagination practices, writing, engaging conflict in high-pressure situations, healing practices, grief practices, disability justice, printmaking, popular education, speculative fiction writing, and survival skills. Participants may also choose a private two-night retreat for reflection, planning, or project work.
Across a full year together, we will move with change, study the conditions around us, and practice adaptation in community.
