Alongside other writings later dismissed as “apocryphal” or “of doubtful authenticity,” such as The Acts of Paul and Thecla, the Gospel of Mary challenged first-century patriarchal systems by affirming that women were just as worthy as men to hold spiritual authority. Meggan Watterson invites us to access that same power by turning inward—by becoming still and cultivating the spiritual perception Mary called “the eye of the heart.” From this place, we can look beyond the ego and recognize what is more real, enduring, infinite, and already present within us.
