At moments like these, uncertainty can feel close at hand — in our inner lives, in society, and in the wider world. Familiar structures, political directions, and long-held values may seem to be shifting beneath us, leaving little solid ground to stand on. In this retreat, we will explore the spaces in between: those threshold moments where something ends, something new has not yet begun, and identity itself can feel less certain.
In Tibetan tradition, these in-between states are known as bardos. The term refers not only to the states that follow physical death, but also to the impermanence we encounter throughout life. Using the verses of the Six Bardos from the Tibetan Book of the Dead as our foundation, we will reflect on how transition shows up in daily life, in relationships, and in meditation. Together, we will consider questions such as: How do we meet loss? What arises when the old self falls away? Who is the “I” that remains present, even when identity is no longer clear?
Gentle physical improvisation exercises will support us in becoming more present and more open to lightness and joy. These experiences will then be brought directly into meditation, deepening our attention both within and beyond practice. With an atmosphere of support, playfulness, and appreciation, this retreat is especially welcoming for those new to meditation, as well as for anyone seeking a fresh entry point into Buddhist practice.
No movement experience is needed — only a willingness to explore your experience in the body you live in.
