Mudra and bandha belong to the Hatha Yoga tradition, alongside asana, pranayama, and shatkarma cleansing practices. This is a profound lineage that remains as relevant today as ever, offering rich support for physical, psychological, and spiritual well-being. Yet in many Western yoga classes, mudra and bandha are often overlooked or misunderstood, leaving their deeper value unexplored. Over this four-day retreat, all four bandhas will be introduced in a clear, progressive way, together with a selected range of hand, head, and full-body mudras. Each practice will be explained in detail and guided with care, while selected pranayama practices will be woven in to deepen their effects.

Mudra and bandha work by sensitising, awakening, and balancing the energy body, the subtle dimension that mirrors the physical form. They can help settle the nervous system, quiet the mind, and open the door to subtler inner states, creating a powerful pathway toward stillness and meditation.
Bandha literally means “to lock,” and these practices are used to hold energy in specific areas before releasing it with intention, helping to lift vitality, create spaciousness, and bring harmony to the energy body. Mudra refers to a gesture or attitude that aligns awareness with subtle energy channels, supporting greater sensitivity, balance, and clarity. Together, mudra and bandha invite a more refined sense of perception and awareness.
Participants will have the opportunity to learn, refine, and experience these practices and their distinct physical and energetic effects. They will leave with greater clarity and confidence to integrate mudra and bandha into their home practice and, where appropriate, into their teaching.
The retreat is open to those with reasonable experience of asana and pranayama, and who are comfortable with simple breath retention practices. It will also include a daily yoga class, yoga nidra, karma yoga, and morning chanting and meditation.
